PROFESSIONAL boxers from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi and Zambia are already in Mutare ahead of a historic boxing tournament set for the Manicaland provincial capital on Saturday night.
Former World Boxing Council Silver welterweight champion Charles Manyuchi has partnered with Mutare City Council to promote this bill.
World Boxing Federation lightweight African champion Simon Ngoma of Zambia is among the international boxers already in the country for the boxing fiesta.
Ngoma has 12 wins in 15 fights.
Dubbed “Pride of Mutare”, the tournament will be staged at Mutare Sports Club.
Female pugilists Lolita Muzeya, Elizabeth Phiri and Mary Phiri will also fight on the night.
Some of the local pugilists on the bout card include former World Boxing Federation welterweight champion Evans Husaihwevhu, Lawrence Chiyangwa, Jeremiah “Jingo” Mhere and John Andrew.
Weigh-in is on tomorrow morning.
“It’s hands on the deck as the clock ticks towards Saturday, but all is in order,” Manyuchi told Zimpapers Sports Hub.
Manyuchi has already set up base in Mutare ahead of the show-piece.
“I am proud to be back in Mutare promoting the growth of boxing in a place I also perfected my art,” added Manyuchi.
Through the Charles Manyuchi Boxing Academy, Manyuchi has promoted fights in Harare, Masvingo and Chivhu.
The former World Boxing Council Silver welterweight champion is on a semi-retirement and has taken it upon himself to promote some of the upcoming boxing talent.
“I can confirm that we will be hosting boxers from Zimbabwe, Zambia, South Africa, Malawi, and Tanzania, making this a truly international spectacle.
“I am sure Mutare is ready.”
Historically, Manicaland has produced boxing stars including the likes of Snake Mandeya, who hailed from Honde Valley.
Manyuchi himself honed his skills through the National Youths Games some of which were held in Mutare in the early 2000s.
“This tournament is a major step in developing boxing not only in Mutare, but across Zimbabwe and the region.
“We are grateful to Mutare City Council for their partnership and support in making this event possible.
“Their commitment to sports development is helping position Mutare as a key destination for international sporting events,” said Manyuchi.
He added: “Boxing is a multi-million-dollar sport.
“One can make huge money if you fight in top international bouts, so this tournament is a platform for our boxers to improve their ratings and attract lucrative fights.”
