A MUTARE-BASED paramedic, Mrs Everjoy Makonya of Discovery Ambulance Services (DAS), has been honoured among the Top 50 Women in Business Management, in recognition of her outstanding contribution to emergency medical services and professional excellence at a glamorous event held in Harare recently.
The prestigious award was presented by Colonel Miniyothabo Baloyi-Chiwenga, alongside Zimbabwe Women in Business Forum Patron, Mrs Chantelle Munowenyu, in a ceremony celebrating women who are making significant strides across various sectors.
Mrs Makonya, a dedicated and highly driven emergency care professional, currently serves as a paramedic at Discovery Ambulance Services’ Mutare Branch.
She has earned a reputation for her unwavering commitment to excellence, continuous professional development, and her role in strengthening emergency medical services in Manicaland Province.
Her journey in emergency medical services began in 2018 when she qualified as an Ambulance Technician.
Despite facing initial challenges, including a delay in securing formal employment, Mrs Makonya remained steadfast in her pursuit of growth.
She volunteered at Medical Air Rescue Services (MARS), a decision she credits for keeping her skills sharp and her passion alive.
“After completing my training, the road was not smooth. I did not secure employment immediately, but instead of giving up, I chose to volunteer.
I understood that growth does not always come with immediate reward,” she said.
Her persistence paid off in 2024 when she joined Discovery Ambulance Services during its expansion phase, initially working in Harare before transferring to Mutare as part of the pioneering team that established the branch.
Beyond her operational duties, Mrs Makonya has consistently pursued academic and professional advancement.
In 2023, she enrolled for a Diploma in Emergency Medical Care with the Women’s University, which she successfully completed.
She is currently studying towards a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Health with the University of Africa in Zambia, while also undertaking a Tutor’s Certificate in Emergency Health Care.
Her dedication to lifelong learning is driven by the evolving nature of emergency medical services.
“Emergency care demands that you keep growing. New protocols, technologies and challenges are always emerging, and you can never afford to stand still,” she said.
Mrs Makonya’s contribution extends beyond clinical practice. She is passionate about empowering the girl child and serves as a role model to young women aspiring to build careers in healthcare and other professional fields.
Reflecting on her journey, she emphasised resilience, discipline and purpose as key pillars of her success.
“Balancing work, family and studies has not been easy. It has required discipline, long nights, sacrifice and a strong support system. But this is not just a career, it is a calling to save lives,” she said.
Her recognition as one of the Top 50 Women in Business Management, not only celebrates her individual achievements, but also highlights the growing impact of women in emergency medical services and leadership roles.
As she continues to grow professionally and academically, Mrs Makonya remains committed to excellence, service and inspiring the next generation.
