MUTARE Polytechnic rugby team will be part of Team Zimbabwe taking part in the Confederation of Universities and Colleges Sports Association of Africa Zone V games which will be held in Zambia from Sunday to next Friday.
Team Zimbabwe went into camp on Wednesday in Harare in preparation for the games and is expected to leave for Zambia tomorrow (Saturday).
10 countries have so far confirmed their participation in the bi-annual tournament, which was last hosted by Namibia in 2012 where Zimbabwe finished third.
Zimbabwe University Sports Association president, Liberty Maedza, said as usual this year there would be track and field events, soccer, netball, volleyball, basketball, table tennis, lawn tennis and rugby as the additional sport.
Team Zimbabwe was selected at the Zimbabwe Tertiary Institution Sports Union games hosted by Midlands Province in June.
The country’s top two winning teams per sporting discipline from the annual university and colleges games clashed at the ZTISU Games to book their ticket for Team Zimbabwe at the CUCSAA Games.
This will be the first time Zimbabwe took a rugby team for the CUCSAA Games and MTC will definitely have a heavy weight to carry as pioneers.
They will be playing sevens rugby.
MTC rugby team captain, Armson Makumbe on Wednesday, said they were excited about the CUCSAA Games and hopes to bring gold medals back home.
“We started a rugby team at Mutare Polytechnic this year and in our debut year won the ZTISU Games. So we are very confident we will scoop a gold medal in Zambia,” said Makumbe.
