THE Mutare City Council refuse collection trucks breakdown, which had left the eastern border city with heaps of garbage mainly in residential suburbs, have been fixed and the local authority expects to clear all outstanding backlogs by Wednesday.
According to notice from the local authority, additional trucks have been hired from the parent Ministry.
“Following the notice of January 17, 2026 regarding the status of solid waste management in the city, we are pleased to inform our residents, stakeholders, and members of the public that there has been significant improvement on our fleet, which will enhance the collection of solid waste throughout the City
“One truck that was previously out of service is now back on the road, and we have managed to hire three additional trucks from the parent ministry.
“This brings our total to 10 trucks currently collecting refuse in the city as of today, 18 January 2026. Furthermore, we expect four of our trucks that were undergoing repairs to be back in operation this week, further augmenting our fleet.
“The optimal number of trucks for effective solid waste management in the city is 12. In light of these developments, we are glad to advise that the situation is normalising, and we should be able to clear all outstanding backlogs by Wednesday 21 January 2026,” reads part of the notice.
The notice further reads: “As the situation improves, we also encourage our residents and members of the public to avoid dumping waste. Please keep waste in your receptacles until the trucks arrive for collection and practise composting for all bio-degradable waste.
“We appreciate the understanding and support of our residents and stakeholders as we work to improve the situation. We remain committed to enhancing our services and will keep you informed about our progress.”
