MORE than 30 people living with albinism in Mutare were left all smiles after receiving sunburn cream lotion creams donation sourced by Mutare Senator Judith Mawire recently. Senator Mawire handed over the lotion creams at various centres in Chikanga, Sakubva, Dangamvura high-density suburbs as well as the city’s central business district.
People living with albinism have of late bemoaned lack of sunburn cream medication at public health institutions as this puts their lives in great danger, amid revelations that close to 2 500 people living with albinism die every year due to this shortage.
Senator Mawire thanked the Zimbabwe Albinos Association for their cooperation and effort in sourcing and handing over the lotion creams to those in need, most of whom can barely afford to buy on their own.
The Mutare Senator said it was an ongoing initiative meant to help people living with albinism in Mutare.
“We gave seven people in Chikanga, the same number in Sakubva, six in the Central Business District and 15 in Dangamvura. This is an ongoing initiative meant to help people living with albinism in Mutare.
“The most important thing to note is that most, if not all, of those we are giving these lotions can hardly afford them on their own hence the intervention.
“I really want to thank the Zimbabwe Albinos Association for the cooperation and effort in sourcing and handing over the lotion creams to those in need. We will continue with our efforts to source more lotions and ensure that those in need get them.
“The recipients were quite happy with the donation and heartily thanked us for our efforts. They reckoned that I am one of the few leaders who are keen to help albinos. I am aware of the fact that there are some who did not get anything and that is why I said we will continue sourcing the lotions for them,” she said.
It is estimated that Zimbabwe has between 14 000 to 17 000 people living with albinism.
