MUTARE Boys’ High duo of Tendekai Collins Mangenje and Tanaka Dowera, together with Dangamvura High School’s, Redeemer ‘Mr Rimz’ Njovo were drafted into the provisional national basketball team ahead of the Zone Six Games.
Zimbabwe is hosting this year’s Regional Zone Six Games set for December in Bulawayo. The three were selected into the national team after an inspired display during the recent National Youth Games held in Masvingo.
After travelling with only seven players to this year’s edition of the National Youth Games instead of 12, the talented youngsters still managed to get a bronze medal.
Manicaland Basketball Association spokesperson, Taurai Dhliwayo, commended the team that represented the province at the National Youth Games for a never-say-die spirit.
“I think it was a commendable effort from the he team that represented the province at the National Youth Games. They did not have everything at their disposal and worse still they only travelled with seven players, but somehow the boys were determined to give their best shot hence the bronze medal. We sincerely hope and pray that the three who were selected into the national team will do well in national team colours,” he said.
Meanwhile, Sakubva and Chikanga will clash tomorrow (Saturday) at Raylton Sports Club for a semi-final ticket in the MBA opening season tournament.
The other quarter-finals match will pit Africa University against Dangamvura.
With Mercenaries and City Sophists already in the semi-finals, the winners between Sakubva and Chikanga will face Mercenaries, while the winners between Africa University and Dangamvura will lock horns with City Sophists in the other semi-finals.
All remaining matches, including the finals, will be played tomorrow.
“We are happy that first round matches went on well. As an association we are also grateful to Raylton Sports Club’s Bar Code proprietor who is supporting us all the way. We urge all basketball enthusiasts to throng Raylton and have fun while watching highly entertaining basketball matches,” said Dhliwayo.
