THIRTEEN years ago, the Zimbabwe Prison and Correctional Services (ZPCS) in Masvingo province, through their rehabilitation and reintegration programmes, formed a dance group.

It was named Mutimurefu School of Arts (MUSA).

The vision was simple – giving inmates a chance to showcase their arts talent.

Fast forward to 2026, the group is excelling on platforms many never thought they would be part of.

Last Saturday, MUSA took first place in the Masvingo provincial finals of the Chibuku Neshamwari dance competition.

The group has 15 members, comprising 14 inmates and one Women’s University in Africa intern, Dudzai Chiripo.

Zimpapers Arts and Entertainment Hub caught up with ZPCS Masvingo Provincial Public Relations Officer, Assistant Principal Correctional Officer Tendai Lessley Chamaida, who gave a glimpse of their journey to success.

“The competition was tough due to strong competition from experienced groups.

“We pushed through teamwork, discipline and continuous rehearsals.

“Winning and securing a slot at the national finals is a great honour and motivation to represent Masvingo Province and ZPCS at the national finals.

“After the win, the group was excited, emotional and grateful for the victory,” said Chaimaida.

Chamaida said through their hard work they managed to excel.

“Our discipline, unity and authentic presentation of the Bira traditional dance made us stand out.

“ZPCS continues to support the group.

“The vision is to preserve and promote Zimbabwean traditional culture through dance and arts.

“Our success is a testimony that rehabilitation, through arts and culture, can positively transform lives, promote discipline, unity and talent development among inmates,” said Chaimaida.

Chaimaida said their target is to represent Masvingo Province well, gain exposure and compete for the top prize.

“We are improving choreography, coordination and stage presentation through intensive rehearsals,” said Chamaida.
