One of the most exciting new golf tournaments in the country, Mutupo/Isibongo, is set to roar into life on February 17.
This will be the second edition of the tournament.
The values driving the Mutupo / Isibongo Golf Tournament are culture, identity, pride and sport.
The tournament is set to be staged in nine provinces, with only Matabeleland South missing out due to not having a gulf club.
Totems that were represented in the previous tournament include Soko, Moyo, Mhofu, Shumba, Nzou, Shiri, Hwesa, Mbizi, Beta, Mhara, Gwai, Gumbo, Gushungo, Nhewa, Mbeva, Chihwa, Dziva, Ngara and Humba. Shiri are the reigning champions.
Tournament director, Ephraim Mashingaidze, said they are expecting a huge turnout as golfers would be battling for bragging rights about which totem has better golfers.
“Mutupo Tournament is set to start in February. It’s a big event on our calendar considering the interest many golfers have in it. We are expecting a high turnout considering the turnout which we received in our last inaugural edition,” he said.
“Shiri Hungwe are the current champions after winning the last edition. We know that many would want to come and defend the pride of their totem. If a totem has many participants, it also puts them in a better position to win,” he said.
“The tournament has drawn a lot of people from different corporations. We have seen top executives participating. We will be going around nine provinces.
“Our values behind the Mutupo are our culture, identity, pride and sport. We understand we have to add value to our culture and be able to identify ourselves and be proud of it.
“So, you will see that sport is now a big business movement. We have seen big companies like Nyaradzo branding the Nyathi on their buses and so forth, which gives them an identity through the totem,” he said.
