ZIMBABWEAN sprinter Gabriel Mvumvure has set a new national record in the 60m race after he clocked 6,60seconds during the International Athletics Association World Indoor championships in Sopot, Poland, at the weekend. The former Churchill High School pupil broke his previous mark of 60,68s. Mvumvure failed to progress to the final but he got consolation in setting a new national record in the distance.
Running in heat one of the semi-finals on Saturday, Mvumvure finished third behind Nester Carter of Jamaica who ran his season’s best of 6,50s to qualify for the final.
Richard Kilty of Britain also qualified from same heat with his personal best of 6,52s. Carter’s reaction time to the gun was 0,139 while Mvumvure had been better at 0,134.
The top two athletes from the same heat made it to the final. It was also a struggle for United States-based long jumper Ngonidzashe Makusha, who was deserted by fine form in Sopot as he failed to make the final.
Makusha has this year jumped beyond eight metres but failed to reach the mark in Poland.
