FIREWORKS are expected as the eighth edition of the annual Mwalimu Kumbula tournament concludes with netball now part of the menu at Kubatana Primary School in Epworth today.
The tournament is held in honour of Mwalimu, who is the son of one of Epworth’s most illustrious sons, Musekiwa Kumbula.
For seven years, the fiesta which has produced renowned footballers like Ronald “Rooney” Chitiyo, Munyaradzi Mawadza, Emmaculate Mawuna, Egness Tumbare, Danai Bhobho and Talent Mukwanda has been football exclusive.
But the organisers have sought to add one of the fast rising sports in the country, netball, as they also want to arrest social ills amongst the girls in this sprouting per-urban settlement.
Three age-groups Under-12, Under-15 and Under-17 are expected to battle it out in both football and netball.
One of the tournament’s organisers, Shepherd Mudzamiri, said all is set for the finals.
“We are expecting fireworks as Epworth comes to a standstill with the finals of the Mwalimu Kumbula tournament unfolding at Kubatana Primary School in Overspill,” said Mudzamiri.
“This is the eighth edition of the annual tournament and a total of 44 teams across three age-groups took part this year.
“We have also introduced netball as we bid to take more and more children from the streets.
“We have observed that we can as well help unearth more diamonds in other sports other than football. So we have incorporated netball for this year’s event.
“We are glad the tournament is helping fight drug abuse and other social vice in Epworth.
“Look, this is a great initiative which was started by Musekiwa Kumbula over eight years ago. We are really excited and we hope to produce more players who will make it big as we will not tire in our efforts to take kids off the streets.”
