NORTHERN Region Soccer League 2024 title runners-up MWOS could be dealt a blow in their technical set-up amid revelations that one of their dressing room’s unsung heroes — Devine Mhoya — could be headed for other pastures.
Mhoya, a strength and conditioning coach, is credited with ensuring that gaffer Lloyd Mutasa had a fit squad as MWOS took the race for promotion into the Premier Soccer League to the wire.
It has emerged that Mhoya’s work at MWOS, who narrowly lost the championship chase to Scottland, is wanted by clubs in Mozambique and South Africa.
He has been the MWOS strength and conditioning coach since 2022, when the Norton outfit won promotion into the NRSL’s Division One.
Although he was not an outstanding player in his playing career, Mhoya has excelled in his new profession.
He played as a goalkeeper for Dynamos when the Harare giants were under the guidance of Kalisto Pasuwa.
According to sources close to the goings-on, Mhoya is on the verge of being snapped up by Mozambique’s perennial continental football campaigners Ferroviario da Beira.
The Mozambicans are understood to have been closely following his work with MWOS and liked what they saw.
“We are happy that one of our own, the fitness trainer Mhoya, is getting some interest from regional professional teams from Mozambique and South Africa.
“Mhoya has managed to build a reputation of managing some players who were written off to make them some top players again.
“Players like Chris Samakweri and Wisdom Mutasa, who many deemed overweight, managed to do so through Mhoya’s fitness schedule, and they did well during the 2023 season after they successfully shed weight.
“He has been in the game for some time, and we believe he can improve with each passing season. There were inquiries from Mozambique’s Ferroviario da Beira, who play in the top division, as well as some South African sides in the top flight and some in the lower leagues,” said the sources.
After two initial attempts, MWOS are hoping for third-time luck when they plunge into the 2025 promotion race.
They are also not leaving anything to chance in their quest.
It is against this background that they sent Mutasa for an attachment with a Turkish elite league club, Instanbul Basaksehir FK.
Mutasa becomes the second coach this month to secure an attachment with a Turkish Super League side.
MWOS indicated that Mutasa would, during his time in the Eastern European country, engage in comprehensive learning experiences.
