‘My siblings hate me’

Dear Tete Barbara
I am the first born in a family of four. My parents got divorced when I was three years old and my mother remarried and had three more children. My parents love me but my siblings give me a hard time in the house.

They set me up for things I haven’t done and accuse me of beating and insulting them and because I am older than them my parents always scold me.

They even tell my friends bad things about me at school, which really hurts me. When I grow up and finish school I just want to move away and never talk to them again.

Tete Barbara Responds
Sibling rivalry is a very common dilemma in families especially in the youthful years. Children growing up together tend to compete for attention, compliments, affection and favours from the parents. Sometimes the competition is healthy but unfortunately if uncontrolled it may become harmful.

Talk to your parents about your siblings behaviour and tell them how you feel. Remember your parents love you all and they cannot choose one child over another. You also love your siblings but your anger is just overshadowing your judgement.

They are younger than you and making fun of you is just a sign of childish behaviour. Just remember that they look up to you for leadership and guidance. Don’t get upset too quickly and forgive them. When you grow up you will move away and have a great life but you will always love and talk to them because they are your family.
Be Happy
