A civil case of an elderly couple from Sigola area turned nasty when the husband unleashed a volley of stunning allegations against his wife claiming she was a witch.
Leonard Mpofu (60)a��s stunning revelations against his wife Alengiwe Mabhena (55) came after the latter told the court that her husband was in the habit of physically, verbally and sexually abusing her.
a�?I am customarily married to Leonard Mpofu. He is violent and is always assaulting me with a switch while labelling me a witch. At times he pours water all over my body saying he is casting out demons.
a�?He once assaulted me with an axe while chasing me out of the house saying he wants to accommodate his 22-year-old girlfriend. He is also claiming that I had friends who are witches and we are taking turns to sleep with a snake which I am in possession of,a�? said Mabhena.
She further claimed that her husband was also sexually abusing her by allegedly inserting fingers into her private parts saying she was not woman enough as he now preferred a a�?heavily builta�? woman.
In response, Mpofu although denying that he was physically and sexually abusing his wife, maintained that she was allegedly practising witchcraft.
a�?When it comes to physical and sexual abuse allegations I know nothing Your Worship but in respect to witchcraft accusations she was exposed by some tsikamutandas (witch-hunters) who were cleansing our village.
a�?She refused to be part of the cleansing ceremony fearing that the tsikutamandas were going to burn her goblin and snake she is sleeping with.
a�?She started sleeping with the snake probably two years ago when she deserted our matrimonial bedroom. Another issue is that she is no longer cooking for me and washing my clothes,a�? said Mpofu.
The presiding magistrate Manasa Musiiwa, before delivering his ruling, said as an elderly couple the parties were supposed to lead an exemplary life which inspired hope and wisdom to the younger generation.
The magistrate however, ordered Mpofu not to abuse or threaten his wife in any way.
