Mzembi to challenge continued placement on remand

Former Foreign Affairs Minister Walter Mzembi, who is being accused of theft of trust property worth US$2 million, is challenging his continued placement on remand.

Mzembi’s legal representative, Mr Killian Mandiki, informed the court that he will file an application on Monday, September 29.

The State is set to respond on October 1, with Harare regional magistrate Mrs Marehwanazvo Gofa expected to deliver a ruling on October 3.

Prosecutor, Ms Mercy Masamvi, had advised the court that Mzembi, whose matter was done virtually, should be remanded further in custody to October 14, pending indictment at the High Court.

The allegations against Mzembi involve the misappropriation of televisions valued at US$2 million.

The televisions were originally purchased to set up fan parks during the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, but were allegedly diverted to his personal use.
