The National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (NAAZ) is racing against time to secure funding for athletes who have qualified for July’s IAAF World Junior Championships in the United States.Three athletes — Pride Lusinga (400m hurdles), Michael Songore (100 and 200m) and Enlitha Ncube (3000m) — have qualified for the championships.
However, there is a real possibility that the promising trio will fail to make the trip to the US owing to NAAZ’s empty coffers.
NAAZ vice-president Aneas Nhoro confirmed the association’s plight, revealing that they have since sent out their begging bowls.
“We are running around looking for sponsorship, but at the same time are also appealing to other well-wishers to chip in and help these athletes achieve their goals,” said Nhoro.
Meanwhile, Government says it is ready to assist the athletes if approached. The Deputy Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Tabitha Kanengoni-Malinga, disclosed that NAAZ are yet to approach her ministry.
