NAAZ Interprovincial tourney gets off blocks

SEASONED campaigner Jacob Mugomeri was the toast of the day at the National Athletics of Zimbabwe Inter-Provincial Championships which got of the blocks at White City Stadium in Bulawayo yesterday when he won the 10 000m race in the only final of the day.

The two-day event that has attracted track and field runners from Zimbabwe’s 10 provinces as well as those from South Africa, Botswana, Zambia and Mozambique will run until this afternoon.

Mugomeri, who has seen it all both on the domestic and international fronts, was in no mood for favours, as he dominated the race from start to finish.

The Mashonaland West long and middle distant runner romped home in 29 minutes, 25,16 seconds well far ahead of Isaac Mpofu, who was a distant second on 30:03,03.

Trust Chidomayi (30:34.21), Wellington Varevi (30:38,61), Cephas Manyika (30:39,23) and John Payarira were third, fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.

The competition enters Day two this morning with athletes expected to take part in the finals both on track and field.

The Championships also doubles up as a selection event to come up with tentative Zimbabwe representative teams for the Africa Senior Championships in Durban, South Africa next month, the World Junior Championships in Poland and the Southern Region Junior Championships in Zambia also next month.
