THE National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (Naaz) is mourning its former vice-chairman Clifford Mutizwa, who passed on in the Midlands on Wednesday.

Mutizwa, whose age could not be ascertained, has been in and out of hospital in the past two years.

Naaz president Tendai Tagara said they had lost a “father figure” in athletics following the death of Mutizwa, a former Midlands Athletics Board chairperson.

“Zimbabwe athletics family lost a great son of athletics in the name of Clifford Mutizwa, who was a great runner in his heydays.

He was competitive during the days of Artwell Mandaza and Bernard Dzoma,” said Tagara.

He said Mutizwa rose to be chairman of Midlands Board then vice-president of Naaz.

“We have lost a father figure who was a unifier.

A number of top runners like Njere Shumba and Partson Muderedzi passed through his hands,” said Tagara.

He said Mutizwa had not been feeling well in the last two years and has been in and out of hospital.

“We had been in constant communication with him till his death. We salute all his contributions to the athletics family,” said Tagara.

He said they are waiting to hear from Mutizwa’s family on funeral arrangements.
