THE National Athletics’ Association of Zimbabwe (NAAZ) boss Tendai Tagara says they are working on resuscitating the annual triangular series to give locals international exposure.
Tagara said the event sees Zimbabwe, Botswana and South Africa participating.
“We are engaged in serious talks with other national athletics representatives from Botswana and South Africa with a view to reviving the athletics competition that was last held in 2006,” he said.
Tagara said the competition would expose locals to international competitions.
“We feel that such an event can expose our athletes to some international competition that can improve their times and help them qualify for international events,” he said.
Tagara said they will be pushing to take advantage of the Region 5 Games legacy facility – White City Stadium to host the event.
“We had a very good year in 2014 with athletes taking part in many international events. We plan to maintain that momentum and take advantage of the state-of-the-art facility stadium which was upgraded for the Games,” he said.
Bulawayo is closer to Botswana and Namibia both of whom have previously driven to the event.
Tagara said Zimbabwe has a lot of talented athletes who lack exposure especially on international platforms.
“We have a lot of talented athletes who can fly our nation’s flag high and I feel that such events can be used not only as exposure but also to develop our athletes.
“Athletics is the discipline that did very well for Zimbabwe winning us 15 gold medals at the Games,” said Tagara.
