Nam summit opens

said in an address to the opening ceremony, “The Islamic republic is not after nuclear weapons” and will never slacken off its right to the “peaceful” use of nuclear energy.
Khamenei said Iran’s slogan is “Nuclear energy for all, nuclear weapons for none.”
He slammed western propaganda against the nuclear programme of the Islamic republic and stated that “A few Western countries want to build a monopoly of nuclear fuel.”
Khamenei condemned the Israeli “occupation” of the Palestinian territory, which he said should be ruled by Palestinians, and called on Nam member states to take practical steps to redress the issue. He also said the UN structure is ‘illogical,’ ‘unjust’ and ‘non-democratic’ and stated that ‘The world must not be controlled by a few dictatorial regimes’.”
The Iranian leader pointed out that “disarmament is an urgent necessity” in today’s world and the Islamic republic calls for a Middle East free from nuclear weapons.
Addressing the summit before handing over the rotating presidency to Iran, Egyptian president Mohamed Mursi said Syria needed a peaceful transition to democracy. President Mursi said bloodshed in Syria would only end if there were “effective interference” from outside.
He voiced support for what he called “the struggle of the Syrian people against an oppressive regime”.
The Syrian delegation to the Nam summit walked out during president Mursi’s speech, Al Jazeera television reported.
Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem criticised the Egyptian president’s stance on developments in Syria, calling it “clear interference” in his country’s internal affairs.
“Mr Mursi went beyond the Non-Aligned Movement’s norm and interfered in the internal affairs of a Nam member state . . . he spoke like a (political) party chief not like a Nam president,” Muallem told Al Alam TV network on Thursday.
The Arab language TV network rejected western media reports claiming that the Syrian delegation had walked out of the summit hall in protest at president Mursi’s remarks.
The network said that Muallem had come out of the conference hall to have an interview with Al Alam.
Addressing the summit, UN secretary-general Mr Ban Ki- moon urged Iran to remove international concerns over its controversial nuclear programme. He urged Iran to find a solution with the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany (P5+1) over its nuclear standoff. On the Syrian issue, he said that all the related parties in Syria should immediately stop violence.
Today, UN faces huge challenges answering peoples’ demands, said the UN secretary-general and that all the world governments should seriously listen to their people’s voice, adding that “We should solve problems through dialogue not confrontation.”
He also asked the Nam member states to solve their disputes peacefully within the framework of UN charter.
“I strongly oppose any country thinking of destroying another one,” he added. — Xinhua/Fars.
