PRIMARY schools ball games teams from all districts of Manicaland will converge in Mutare this weekend for this year’s provincial finals, which will culminate in the national finals also to be hosted by the eastern border city later this month.
The potentially exciting provincial finals will see defending champions by discipline — netball (Chipinge, boys and girls) football (Makoni), boys’ volleyball (Chipinge), girls’ volleyball (Buhera), boys and girls basketball (Mutare), rugby (Chipinge), and boys and girls handball (Makoni) — hoping to extend their dominance.
National Association of Primary Heads (NAPH) Manicaland provincial chairperson, Trust Kurauone Chipongo, confirmed that the provincial finals will go ahead this weekend.
The Gaza Primary School head, said a team of provincial coaches will use the event to select players to represent the province at the national finals.
“NAPH Manicaland will host the provincial ball games competitions on July 9 and 10 (this weekend). The seven districts of Manicaland will converge at Chancellor Primary School to compete in various ball game sport codes. The competition will produce winners, but this will also allow the province to scout and select players per team in order to form a Manicaland provincial team in every sport code competed,” he said.
Chipongo also confirmed that the national finals will be held in Mutare.
“The provincial finals are in preparation for the NAPH national ball games competition to be held from July 20 to 24, still in Mutare, hence all provinces of Zimbabwe with their NAPH teams will be in Mutare,” he said.
Chipongo appealed to partners to join NAPH in promoting young sporting talent.
“This also presents an opportunity for the corporate community and our partners to come in and promote junior sporting talent. It is also an opportune time for talent scouts to identify talent at an early stage and ensure it is nurtured for the future benefit of the individual and the nation at large,” said Chipongo.
