Nash basketball tourney kicks off at Girls College

GIRLS College will be a hive of activity today when 14 Bulawayo schools converge for the National Association of Secondary Schools Heads (Nash) Under-14 girls’ basketball tournament.

The winners of today’s event will represent Bulawayo province at the inter-provincial tournament on a later date.

Northlea, Girls College, Ihlathi, Dominican Convent, Eveline, Mandwandwe, St Columbas, Townsend, Njube, Sizane, Nkulumane and Montrose High are among the schools set for the tournament.

Girls College basketball coach, Prosper Simbisai Jaya said they were honoured to be invited to participate in such an event as it will expose his team to competitive basketball.

As a private school, Girls College is not part of the Nash, which is an organisation of public secondary schools.

“The team will consist of mostly Form 1 girls who aren’t as experienced as the side I would’ve loved to field for the tournament. The event just happened to clash with another basketball tourney in Harare so most of the strongest players had already been selected for the team going to Harare. The team for this tournament will have to work extra hard,” said Jaya.

Northlea High are the holders and coach Jonah Vuma said they want to retain the title to make their school proud.

The matches will begin at 8.30AM with hosts Girls College taking on Eveline High and Northlea playing Mandwandwe.

All schools are required to bring their team lists, which should include team photo, school identity cards and birth certificates for vetting purposes.
