National events an anchor towards Vision 2030

ATTENDING the Independence Day celebrations in Murambinda, Buhera, Manicaland province, was like stepping into a kaleidoscope of colours, cultures and camaraderie.

The air was filled with the sounds of jubilation, the smell of traditional dishes wafting through the crowd and the sight of people from all walks of life coming together in unity.

It was a moment frozen in time, a snapshot of the true spirit of Zimbabwe — resilient, proud and full of hope for the future.

As I stood amidst the sea of faces, each one telling a unique story of their journey to independence, I couldn’t help but be inspired by the sense of togetherness and shared purpose that filled the air.

However, it is essential to recognise that there is still much work to be done in terms of effectively marketing brand Zimbabwe during these national events.

This article explores the need to tap into national events, such as Independence Day celebrations, as a means to sell the country’s vision and transform these occasions into commercial dividends.

The Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF)  was an opportunity for our country to make billions of dollars.

We were supposed to assemble regional business leaders and harness the opportunities around critical sectors of the economy.

Planning structures must come in and set up a structured development plan around economic hubs.

ZITF project can be an opportunity for regional integration towards vision 2030.

Plans must be put well to advance and ignite the growth of the economy towards vision 2030.

1. Vision 2030 must target big opportunities:

As Zimbabwe looks towards Vision 2030, it is crucial that the country targets big opportunities to capitalise on national events for economic gain.

These events serve as a canvas upon which the country’s vision can be painted in vibrant hues, showcasing the best of what Zimbabwe has to offer to the world.

It is crucial to strategically align these events with key sectors such as tourism, agriculture, manufacturing and technology.

Zimbabwe can position itself as a beacon of innovation and growth in the region.

It’s an opportunity to dream big, to think outside the box and to set the stage for a future that is bright, prosperous, and full of promise.

2. Commercialise events:

Commercialising national events is not just about selling tickets and merchandise; it’s about creating an experience that captivates the senses, ignites the imagination and leaves a lasting impression on attendees. Partnering with private sector companies allows event organisers to tap into a wealth of resources, expertise and creativity to create unique offerings that attract both local and international audiences. From food festivals to music concerts, from cultural showcases to sporting events, there are endless possibilities to turn these celebrations into revenue-generating opportunities that benefit the local economy. It’s a chance to showcase the entrepreneurial spirit of Zimbabweans, to support local businesses and to create a vibrant marketplace that thrives on innovation and collaboration.

3. Platform for rebranding:

National events provide a powerful platform for rebranding Zimbabwe on the global stage, shining a spotlight on the country’s rich cultural heritage, natural beauty and diverse offerings. It is important to leverage these events to tell a new story, to change perceptions and to showcase the best of what Zimbabwe has to offer so that the country attracts tourists, investors and partners who are eager to explore its untapped potential. It’s an opportunity to reposition Zimbabwe as a destination of choice for business and leisure, a land of opportunity and promise that is open for collaboration and partnership.

It’s time to paint a new picture of Zimbabwe, one that is vibrant, dynamic and full of possibilities.

4. Addressing planning aspect:

Strategic planning is the backbone of successful national events, laying the foundation for a seamless, safe and memorable experience for all participants.

From securing the necessary permits and licences to coordinating logistics, security and emergency response plans, every detail must be carefully considered to ensure the success of these events.

Investing in infrastructure, technology and human resources will ensure Zimbabwe creates a world-class event experience that attracts visitors, generates revenue and showcases the country in the best possible light.

It’s an opportunity to demonstrate the country’s commitment to excellence, to professionalism and to creating a welcoming environment for all who attend.

5. Regional markets:

National events serve as a gateway to tap into regional markets, promoting local products and services to a wider audience and attracting new customers and partners.

Showcasing Zimbabwean goods, crafts and cuisine during these events allows local businesses to expand their reach, boost their sales and create new opportunities for growth. It’s a chance to highlight the unique offerings of Zimbabwe, from traditional art to modern innovations, and to position the country as a hub of creativity, talent and entrepreneurship. Zimbabwe can strengthen its economic ties, foster collaboration and create a marketplace that thrives on diversity and inclusivity by connecting with regional markets.

6. International markets:

In addition to regional markets, national events can also attract international markets, drawing in foreign investors, sponsors and partners who are eager to explore the opportunities available in Zimbabwe. Showcasing the country’s potential, its resources and its vision for the future during these events will allow Zimbabwe to create a compelling case for investment, collaboration and partnership. It’s an opportunity to open doors, to forge new relationships and to position Zimbabwe as a key player in the global market. By attracting international markets, Zimbabwe can create new opportunities for growth, innovation and prosperity that benefit both the country and its global partners.

7. Investment opportunities:

National events present a unique opportunity to attract investment in key sectors such as tourism, agriculture, manufacturing and technology, creating a ripple effect that drives economic growth and development. It is significant to highlight the investment opportunities available in Zimbabwe so that the Government attracts both local and foreign investors who are eager to contribute to the country’s progress. It’s a chance to create jobs, stimulate innovation and build a sustainable future for all Zimbabweans.

 8. Fellowship and exchange programmes with other countries:

National events can also be used to promote fellowship and exchange programmes with other countries, fostering a spirit of collaboration, understanding and cultural exchange. Inviting international guests, performers and delegates to participate in these events will enable Zimbabwe to create a sense of camaraderie and friendship that transcends borders. It’s an opportunity to build bridges, to learn from one another and to create lasting partnerships that benefit both Zimbabwe and its global partners. Embracing fellowship and exchange programmes will lead to the creation of a more connected, inclusive and vibrant community that celebrates diversity, creativity and unity.

9. Unity of purpose:

One of the key aspects that national events, such as Independence Day celebrations, can foster is the unity of purpose among the citizens of Zimbabwe. These events provide an opportunity for people from diverse backgrounds, ethnicities, and regions to come together and celebrate their shared national identity. The sense of unity and togetherness that emerges during these occasions can have profound effects on the social fabric of the country.

Research has shown that a strong sense of unity among citizens is closely linked to social cohesion, political stability, and economic progress. When people feel a sense of belonging and common purpose, they are more likely to work together towards common goals, overcome challenges and build a prosperous nation. National events serve as powerful symbols of unity, reminding individuals of their shared history, struggles and aspirations.

10. Establishment of economic hubs

Another significant aspect of national events like Independence Day celebrations is the establishment of economic hubs. These events provide an opportunity to showcase and promote various economic sectors, thereby stimulating economic growth and development.

During Independence Day celebrations, different industries and businesses can showcase their products, services, and innovations. This exposure not only boosts their visibility but also attracts potential investors and customers. The presence of a diverse range of businesses and industries in one location creates a hub of economic activity, where networking, collaboration and economic exchanges can take place.

The establishment of economic hubs during national events can have several tangible benefits. Firstly, it promotes local businesses and stimulates entrepreneurship. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can gain exposure and access to a larger customer base, potentially leading to increased sales and growth. This, in turn, contributes to job creation and the overall economic prosperity of the region.

Secondly, economic hubs attract investment and promote economic diversification.

National events often draw the attention of local and international investors, who are keen to explore opportunities in emerging markets.

By showcasing the potential of various sectors, such as agriculture, manufacturing, tourism and technology, these events can attract investment and foster economic growth.

Thirdly, the establishment of economic hubs encourages knowledge sharing and innovation.

When businesses and industries gather in one place, there is a greater opportunity for collaboration, learning and the exchange of ideas.

This can lead to the development of new products, services and technologies, which in turn drive economic competitiveness and advancement.

Lastly, economic hubs created during national events can have a ripple effect on the surrounding communities.

The increased economic activity can lead to improvements in infrastructure, services and quality of life for the local population. It can also create spin-off industries and support sectors, such as hospitality, transportation and entertainment, which further contribute to the local economy.

In conclusion, national events, such as the Independence Day celebrations, provide an ideal platform to tap into the economic potential of Zimbabwe.

By strategically capitalising on these occasions, the country can harness the spirit of unity, collectivism and national pride to sell its vision and turn these events into commercial dividends.

Key factors to consider include targeting big opportunities outlined in Vision 2030, commercialising events to stimulate the local economy, using national events as a platform for rebranding, addressing planning aspects for seamless experiences, targeting regional and international markets, creating investment opportunities, fostering fellowship and exchange programmes with other countries, promoting cultural diversity and understanding, and empowering individuals and communities through international collaboration.

By embracing and fully leveraging national events, Zimbabwe can put itself on the regional and international map, attracting tourism, investment and showcasing the country’s vision for a prosperous future.
