ZIMBABWE has achieved 105 percent of its maize planting target for the 2025/2026 summer cropping season, with 1 885 833 hectares (ha) planted out of the targeted 1,8 m ha.

The condition of planted crops is also reported to be generally good across the country.

Latest data compiled by the Agricultural and Rural Development Advisory Services (ARDAS) revealed that this year’s planted maize crop surpassed last season’s 1 728 897 hectares, with several provinces exceeding their targets.

Mashonaland West province has the highest hectarage, with 354 627ha planted, above its goal of 340 000ha.

Manicaland surpassed its 265 000ha target with 274 905ha planted; while Mashonaland East achieved 111 percent of its ha target, planting 249 490ha. Midlands also exceeded its 300 000ha target.

In Masvingo, 217 030ha of maize were planted, while Mashonaland Central has planted 273 043ha.

Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development Professor Obert Jiri said the crop and livestock situation is pleasing following the availability of adequate rains nationwide.

“We are receiving good rains that are improving our crops. Moreover, livestock body condition is improving across the country as animals continue to have access to lush rain-fed grazing, but monocalcium supplements are to be practised,” he said.
