National Museums celebrate 41yrs of existence

The National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe last Friday celebrated 41 years of existence preserving the past together with the National Arts Council and Zimbabwe Tourism Authority.

The celebrations were held under the theme ‘Hyper-connected Museums: New approaches, New Publics’.

Gweru Museum also took part in celebrating the International Museums Day’ as it hosted a Culture Week, which started on Monday 14 and ended on Friday as a way of appreciating different cultures within Zimbabwe.

Addressing the gathering, the regional director for Midlands province Mrs Tonderayi Banda said they were celebrating 41 years of existence.

The Gweru branch hosted artistes to display their work for the public as a way of marketing their products.

“Every year on May 18, we celebrate International Museum Day and its now 41 years since we started preserving the past as a way of appreciating our roots.

“As Gweru branch, we decided to host a culture week where we invited people to come at our premises to showcase their works to the public,” she said. Mrs Banda added that they arranged for free entrance into the museum during the Culture Week.

She said they aimed to raise awareness on the importance of museums as preservatives for historical things. Museums, she said, were also educative to students of heritage studies.

“We have made entrance into the museum to be free for the whole week so that we can raise awareness to the people and to show the importance of museum in our communities.”
