THE organisers of the annual Ndau Arts Festival in Chipinge says the little known arts festival is moving from strength to strength as this year various stakeholders, including tertiary institutions, will take part in the two-day event. The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sports, Arts and Culture, Dr Thokozile Chitepo is expected to grace the ceremony.
The Ndau Arts Festival, which is slated for October 10 this year at Bangira at Paivepo Arts Development Centre in Chipinge, is promising to attract a lot of interest from various players including those in tertiary institutions such as Midlands State University (MSU) and University of Zimbabwe (UZ).
Head of the festival organising committee, Mr Philip Kusasa, confirmed the development and said preparations were at an advanced stage with organisers working with various stakeholders in mobilising resources.
Mr Kusasa said the third edition of the festival was aimed at encouraging the Chipinge community to consolidate, preserve as well as market the Ndau culture in the country.
“Basically, the festival is aimed at preserving cultural beliefs of the Ndau cultural and other cultural beliefs in the country.
“We will take this opportunity to give all participants a chance to showcase their beliefs and other cultural dances.
“We are aiming at fighting cultural imperialism which is being fuelled by descending cultures from western countries. Chipinge basically was affected by the invasion of missionary ministries hence we need to work on the restoration on our identity,” said Mr Kusasa.
The event which started two years ago is fast becoming a national event through the participation of various players at national level with some groups from as far as Hwange and Harare gracing the event last year.
The Department of English and Communication at Midlands State University and UZ’s Department of Linguistics confirmed their presence.
The organising committee is, however, appealing for donations in cash and kind towards the hosting of the festival next month.
“We are urging individuals and business community to come on board and donate towards the hosting of the third annual festival.
“We are using the Chipinge DA’s Office in mobilising resources for this event. All those interested to take part should not hesitate to contact us on 0775240818,” added Mr Kusasa.
Traditional dances to be showcased include muchongoyo, mhongo, chokoto and others from various groups.
Exhibitions of traditional foods will also be done.
