WARRIORS boss Michael Nees has defended his decision to include Simba Bhora defender Isheanesu Mauchi, in the squad announced yesterday.

Nees explained the selection and omission of certain players.

The selected troops are expected to feature in the back-to-back 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Benin next Thursday in Durban, South Africa, and then visit Nigeria to play the Super Eagles five days later.

The 22-year-old giant defender is the youngest man on the list of defenders picked by Nees.

Last season, Mauchi played 30 matches as Simba Bhora won the Castle Lager Premiership.

He was named as one of the Soccer Stars of the Year. The German coach praised Mauchi, saying he was too good to resist.

“Mauchi was a regular for Simba Bhora last season and played a crucial role in their championship win.

“He has a good defensive record and has shown versatility by playing wing-back,” said Nees.

Nees revealed that the team’s pre-season training in South Africa helped Mauchi’s case. Mauchi said it was a dream come true to be part of the Warriors squad alongside veterans like Marshall Munetsi, Khama Billus and Knowledge Musona.

“It’s a dream come true, and I want to give all the glory to God for making this possible,” Mauchi said.

“I never thought it would happen so soon but I believe God’s timing is always best. I’m grateful to my supportive family, coach Nees, and the Simba Bhora family.

“I’ve been praying to be ready to make the most of the opportunity when it comes.”
