Netsayi Chigwendere ropes in Farquharson

versatile songbird is not new to the music circles as she has two albums under her belt, “Chimurenga Soul” and ‘Monkey’s Wedding”, that she released during her 10-year stay in the United Kingdom.

She boasts a rich musical curriculum vitae where she has collaborated with big local and international names. Netsayi has also toured Europe together with Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

It is, however, the involvement of Farquharson that is likely to generate interest among her fans.
Farquharson has been an influential figure on the local music scene for more than two decades. He used to play on keyboards for Ilanga and worked with superstar Oliver Mtukudzi and mbira queen Chiwoniso Maraire.

Farquharson is likely to put to good use his vast knowledge that he has imported from working with South Africa’s Freshlyground in recent years, into the album.

“Keith and I have talked about working together for a long time. Somehow it never worked out. But on this album I knew I needed someone who understands Zimbabwean pop. I was thrilled when I found out that Keith was around,” said Netsayi.

Farquharson said he got to know Netsayi after he attended one of her shows in London.
“Netsayi and I met socially in Zimbabwe, but my first experience of her music was in London when I went to one of her shows. She sang on the Migrant Souls album that I recorded and produced in Germany around 2005. She has a tremendously rich voice, catchy vocal melodies and interesting lyrics. But I am more interested in the route she has taken — using marimba for bass lines. It’s not just innovative, but pretty bold and I really enjoyed the challenge,” he said.

Farquharson said Zimbabwe has vast natural talent that needed to be tapped.
“Of course, there are heaps of talent on both sides of Limpopo, but I feel like Zimbabwean musicians are better at incorporating traditional elements and rhythms in their songs. There are some really great young Zimbabwean players out there and their music is becoming more inventive,” he said.
