More than 400 Zimbabweans who worked in South African gold mines under the Witwatersrand Native Labour Association (Wenela) have been registered and tested positive for pneumoconiosis, making them eligible to receive compensation.

Pneumoconiosis is an interstitial lung disease caused by breathing in dust particles that damage the lungs.

Speaking at Tuesday’s post-Cabinet briefing, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said: “The Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, Hon. Paul Mavima, reported that 442 ex-Wenela Mine workers were registered and tested for pneumoconiosis between 31st May to 7th June, 2021.”
