ADOLESCENTS are the most vulnerable group especially if not equipped with knowledge and skills to participate in decision-making on sexual reproductive health, an expert has said.
Speaking at a workshop hosted by the United Nations Population Fund and the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) on Monday, health specialist Mr Blessing Nyagumbo said: “Through the institutional capacity strengthening of the Ministry of Health and Child Care, assessment of children’s development and learning at the end of the reception year, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education’s spotlight initiatives on sexual reproductive health have gathered pace, strengthening community systems.”
Mr Nyagumbo added that child marriages lead to early childbearing, which, in turn, contributes to mortality – a leading cause of death among girls aged 15-19 globally.
She said there is still a long way to go to end child marriages, particularly in developing countries like Zimbabwe.
