STEWARD Bank has partnered with the Zimbabwe Chess Federation (ZCF) for this year’s four-day $5 million Easter Open Chess Tournament, which begins on April 7 in Harare.
Following the unveiling of the sponsorship package, ZCF president Mucha Mkanganwi expressed gratitude towards Steward Bank for supporting the sport.
“We are grateful to Steward Bank for extending a hand in supporting chess,” he said.
“Chess in Zimbabwe is slowly rising and we are certain our tournament budget will soon match those of countries like Kenya.
“We are challenged by such heights and we believe we will also get there.”
The Steward Bank Easter Open Chess tournament is set to attract more than 120 participants.
It features three categories, which include the open section, ladies’ and development (Under-16).
In the open section, defending champion and national team player Spencer Masango will face stiff competition from the likes of former national champion Jemusse Zhemba, Roy Mwadzura and Emarald Mushore.
Kudzanayi Charinda, Linda Shaba, Refiloe Mudodo, Tatenda Zengeni and Colletta Wakuruwarewa will battle for gold in the ladies’ section.
