MEDIA organisations should provide necessary support and training to ensure female journalists hold senior positions in the sector.
Addressing female journalists from across the country at the Zimbabwe Women in Media Conference held in Harare on Wednesday, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Deputy Minister Kindness Paradza said for gender equality to be attained, women should be afforded the opportunity to take up top positions in media.
“As Government, we encourage media organisations to actively provide the necessary support and training to advance female media workers for them to achieve higher positions,” he said.
He said media reforms over the last three years have resulted in female journalists heading major media stables.
Some of the female leaders include Victoria Ruzvidzo (The Sunday Mail Editor), Nomsa Nkala (head of Zimpapers Television Network), Adelaide Chikunguru (Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation CEO), Wendy Nyakurerwa-Matinde (Manica Post Editor), and Faith Zaba (Zimbabwe Independent Editor), among others.
Deputy Minister Paradza said for a long time women in media had been marginalised
“We fully share the analysis of WAN-IFRA Women in News that gender equality is impossible to attain without also attaining the equality of voices represented in the media.”
