THE Agricultural Marketing Authority (AMA) has unveiled a unique Train-the-Trainer programme to bolster Zimbabwe’s macadamia sector in light of growing global demand.
This initiative commenced with a hands-on training session held in Chipinge, where farmers and extension officers learned about best practices in macadamia farming from a South African consultant.
Two cluster head farmers were selected from the 29 wards in Chipinge district as part of the programme.
These head farmers will play a pivotal role in disseminating the knowledge acquired during the training to farmers in their respective communities.
Acting AMA chief executive officer Mr Jonathan Mukuruba said the training programme is essential for improving macadamia production.
“This programme is a vital step towards professionalising macadamia production in Zimbabwe,” he said.
By empowering extension officers and cluster head farmers, the AMA is demonstrating its commitment to establishing a sustainable model that will enhance farmer participation and position Zimbabwe as a significant player in the international macadamia market, providing reassurance about the programme’s effectiveness.
The climatic conditions in Chipinge and surrounding areas provide an ideal environment for macadamia cultivation.
However, the sector has faced a number of hurdles, including limited technical knowledge among farmers, post-harvest handling issues and inadequate market linkages, all of which have hindered its growth.
AMA’s intervention aims to address these gaps, equipping farmers with essential expertise to increase production while meeting export requirements.
