NEW: Bakers Inn manager steals US$3 000 to gamble

A 28-year-old Bakers Inn shift manager has been sentenced to 30 months in prison after stealing US$3 420 from his employer to fund online gambling.

William Gonese pleaded guilty to theft charges when he appeared before Harare magistrate Ms Lynne Chinzou.

The court heard that Gonese took the money from the company safe and used it for online gambling on the Aviator platform intending to return the funds if he won.

Unfortunately, he literally gambled and lost, leading to his arrest and conviction.

Twelve months were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour while another eight months were suspended on condition that he pays restitution.

Gonese will serve an effective 10 months behind bars.
