SPEAKERS at the inaugural Gender and Climate Change Symposium held in Harare on Wednesday urged policymakers to strengthen the participation of women in climate change mitigation and adaptation, as they are the most affected by the phenomenon.

Women are confronted with increased workload, limited access to resources and heightened risks to their health and safety due to climate change.

Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Minister, Senator Monica Mutsvangwa, said the Government was working to address these issues.

“As Government, we remain committed to advancing gender-responsive climate policies,” she said.

“We are implementing programmes to enhance women’s access to climate finance, technology and capacity-building opportunities. We are also collaborating with international partners to share knowledge, resources and expertise.”

Minister Mutsvangwa launched a National Gender and Climate Change Task Force during the symposium.

The taskforce will implement the Climate Change Gender Action Plan, which provides a framework for the development of gender-sensitive climate policies.
