NEW: Canada hails women’s quota system in Parliament

Online Reporter

CANADIAN Ambassador to Zimbabwe Mrs Christina Buchan has praised the country’s women’s parliamentary quota system as a powerful tool for gender empowerment.

She said it was important in promoting democracy.

Ambassador Buchan was speaking during a courtesy call on the Speaker of the National Assembly, Advocate Jacob Mudenda, on Tuesday.

Canada, she said, has a similar system to the one being used in Zimbabwe.

“We had a good conversation about women in Parliament and how Zimbabwe has a quota system, and how Canada believes in women’s empowerment.

“Gender equality in Parliament is very important as it shapes our society,” she said.
