THE Government has launched the second phase of the Emergency Social Cash Transfer (ESCT) programme which aims to provide cash payments to at least 19 000 vulnerable households in rural areas.
The programme, which is being implemented in partnership with the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), was launched in Bulawayo recently.
In a statement on Thursday, UNICEF said the programme will offer cash payments in five new rural districts.
“Under this new phase, the Emergency Social Cash Transfer (ESCT), which is being funded by the German Government through KfW and delivered together with the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, UNICEF, Goal and World Vision, will provide cash payments to five new districts,” reads part of the statement.
“The new districts are Binga, Rushinga, Mudzi, Mangwe and Makoni, while (we are also) providing a further three months of continuity support to existing urban districts.”
The programme combines nutrition and child protection services.
In 2022 the programme supported over 113 790 individuals and 25 801 households in urban areas.
