Elections for Zimbabwe’s next Child President will be held on Wednesday ahead of the official opening of the 30th session of the Child Parliament on Saturday.

In a statement on Tuesday, Zimbabwe Youth Council (ZYC) assistant director for press and public relations Mr Tanzikwa Guranungo said all the country’s provinces and constituencies will be represented.

“All elected and selected Child Parliamentarians across the country are expected to arrive in Harare on Tuesday the 13th of June and undergo an orientation workshop that will focus on parliament procedures and how to debate in Parliament.  “On Friday the 17th of June, child parliamentarians and the Children Guard of Honour will undertake rehearsals as preparation for the official opening on Saturday the 18th,” he said.

The Children’s Parliament consists of the National Assembly and the Senate, representing all the country’s provinces and constituencies.

The Child Parliament was established in 1991 to advocate for children’s rights.

Every year, the Ministry of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation and ZYC take the opportunity to officially open the Child Parliament as a way of commemorating June 16, the Day of the African Child.
