CHIPINGE Rural District Council Ward Four councillor, Councillor Godfrey Makuyana of ZANU PF was yesterday elected new council chairman.

Cllr Makuyana got 22 votes to Cllr Callisto Magama’s 17 during the election held at Chimanimani Hotel after an induction course.

He will be deputised by Councillor Edmore Masiya of Ward 28.

Zanu PF has 23 councillors while CCC has 16.

In his acceptance speech, Cllr Makuyana said he felt honoured to be elected into the position.

He said the councillors must work together across the political divide in order to promote development that leaves no one and no place behind.

“I feel honoured to be elected as Chipinge RDC chairperson. My colleagues have shown confidence in me and I pledge to work well with everyone for the benefit of the district.

“I am calling upon all the councillors to set aside their political differences, be servants of the people and work with Government departments to improve service delivery. This can all be achieved through unity,” said Cllr Makuyana.

Speaking during the same event, Chipinge District Development Coordinator, Mr William Mashava encouraged the councillors to put the development of the district first.

“It is no longer business as usual. All councillors should work with the central Government towards the attainment of Vision 2030,” he said.

Chipinge Town Council is also expected to elect a chairman and committee members tomorrow.
