A TOTAL of 64 students graduated with certificates in various trades during a colourful ceremony at Chipinge College of Horticulture last Friday.
Out of these 64, 14 are refugees from the nearby Tongogara Refugee Camp.
They completed one-year courses in brick and block laying, motor mechanics, welding, carpentry and joinery, garment making as well as beauty and therapy.
Speaking at the ceremony, the United Church of Christ in Zimbabwe (UCCZ) youth adviser, Mr Harry Mangezi, said their church is supporting Government’s vision of having a skilled workforce as espoused in the National Development Strategy (NDS1), through the Youth Education Pack which offers young men and women various courses at the college.
He said: “As we go out into the world, we should employ people and not wait to be employed.”
The centre’s administrator, Mr Victor Ngwenya, weighed in: “I urge you to be good ambassadors of this college as you embark on another leg of your journey of life.”
Chipinge College of Horticulture is a UCCZ-related institution which since 2012, with assistance from the Norwegian Refugee Council, has been offering courses to hundreds of youths who went through its system.
UCCZ president Reverend John Matiza and his deputy Rev Mutsumbeyi graced the graduation ceremony.
