Chitungwiza Town Council has given illegal tuckshop owners two days to demolish structures around Chitungwiza Town Centre’s Area D.
There has been a number of zinc, wooden and precast wall structures that have been sprouting in the area, prompting Chitungwiza acting Town Clerk Mrs Evangelista Machona to invoke Section 35 of the Regional, Town and Country Planning Act (Chapter 29:12).
In a statement, Mrs Machona said most new buildings around the town centre are being built without approval from the authorities.
“This order comes into operation within 48 hours and the demolitions and actions outlined herein should be completed by the 2nd of January 2022.
“All those buildings and durawalls without adequate council papers and inspections will risk their structures being demolished.
“You are further advised that failure to comply with this order within the prescribed period will allow council to proceed and the effects of demolitions at the expense of the owner.”
Chitungwiza, which has been a haven for land barons, has grappled with illegal stands and illegal structures for years.
On several occasions, the council has promised to bring back order, but its threats usually count for very little.
