NEW: Defending basketball champs off to rocky start

THE Harare Basketball Super Six League got off to a wildly entertaining start this past weekend, as opening-day defeats to defending champions Foxes and Vixens ushered in a new era for the sport in the province.

Vixens, last season’s women’s champions, went down 46-37 to JBC, while Bucs got the edge over Foxes 60-58 at the City Sports Center on Sunday.

In other results, UZ Sparks beat Green Stars 61-27 to shoot to the top of the women’s log standings, while Bunnies beat Harare City Hornets 45-38.

By virtue of being the biggest winners of the opening round, Sparks have taken an early lead on the log standings, while JBC and Bunnies make the top three teams.

Each team has two points, while Harare City Hornets, Vixens, and Green Stars wrap up the standings with a point each.

In the men’s category, JBC emerged as the biggest winners after their 73-50 win over Leopards Academy, while UZ Stars emerged as 63-54 victors over Harare City Hornets.

This sees JBC top the standings, followed by UZ Stars, Bucs, Foxes, Harare City Hornets and Leopards Academy, respectively.
