Dinson Iron and Steel Company says it is committed to environmental stewardship after hosting this year’s National Tree Planting Day celebrations on Saturday.

Defence Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri represented President Mnangagwa at the National Tree Planting Day commemorations, held in Manhize.

The choice of Dinson Iron and Steel as the venue was both symbolic and strategic as the establishment of the billion-dollar steel plant required the clearance of significant swathes of indigenous forests.

Recognising this environmental impact, the company has launched an ambitious reclamation programme aimed at restoring the natural ecosystem and promoting sustainable land use.

In her speech on Saturday, Environment, Climate and Wildlife Acting Minister Tatenda Mavetera lauded Dinson Iron and Steel Company for its initiatives to restore forests.

“We are happy that our hosts today, Dinson Iron and Steel have acknowledged the impact their operations have on the environment and have chosen to show through action that players in this sector have a role to play in achieving environmental sustainability,” she said.

She said the Ministry is ensuring that the environmental impact assessment process is being implemented including monitoring of mining entities’ environmental management plans.

This year’s Tree of the Year for 2024 is Rauvolfia caffra commonly known as the Quinine Tree.
