A total 4 800 small- and large-scale dairy farmers countrywide have benefitted from the €7 million in-calf project under the Zimbabwe Agricultural Growth Programme (ZAGP), which is one of Government’s initiatives to boost the local dairy sector.
Since 2019, and with assistance from the European Union (EU) and Swedish Embassy, ZAGP has successfully addressed some of the challenges in the dairy value chain.
The heifers, which were imported from South Africa, were being distributed under the Transforming Zimbabwe’s Dairy Value Chain for the Future (TranZDVC) project.
Addressing dairy farmers during a beneficiary celebration gala at Chivandire Dairy Farm in Chikomba, Mashonaland East province, to mark the conclusion of the project, Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development Permanent Secretary Dr John Basera said:
“I would also like to commend the delegation of the European Union and the Embassy of Sweden for a collaborated effort in promoting dairy development in Zimbabwe.
“I hereby urge all the TranZDVC beneficiaries to maximise the opportunity presented to them by the TranZDVC project and Government of Zimbabwe to scale up their milk production endeavours.”
He expressed satisfaction with the contribution of small to medium scale dairy farmers to milk production.
Ms Sara Piccoli, programme manager for the EU delegation to Zimbabwe, said her organisation supports Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030.
“The common objective is to contribute to the achievement of the country’s Vision 2030.
“A special thank you to the Government services; without their active involvement and support, the success of the project would not have been possible,” said Ms Piccoli.
