Agricultural and Rural Development Authority (ARDA) board chairman, Mr Ivan Craig, has urged farmers to invest in various water harvesting methods.
Responding to questions from Zimpapers Politics Hub, Mr Craig said farmers should embrace water harvesting methods for them to have better yields so that they produce enough food.
He urged farmers to embrace renewable energy in irrigation as it complements the Government in power supply for the sector.
“Farmers can utilize renewable energy through the use of solar systems to power their irrigation. This complements what the Government is doing in terms of power supply. With solar, farmers can irrigate as and when their crops require water because the power supply is always available,” he said.
Mr Craig said farmers can utilise water harvesting so that they have enough water throughout the year.
“We’ve got to harness water harvesting through the use of gutters, contour ridging and bolster ridging. Mulching and minimum tillage is also important,” Mr Craig said.
