FARMERS have been urged to be on the lookout for the fall armyworm and promptly implement mitigatory measures should they detect the pest.
Speaking to The Sunday Mail Online on Wednesday, agronomist Mr Ivan Craig detailed the pest’s life cycle and underscored the importance of early detection and control.
“The fall armyworm has become a widespread menace, affecting a significant portion of the maize crop across the country,” he said.
“The caterpillar stage is the most destructive. At this point, the worm is still young and tender, making it easier to control using recommended pesticides.
“The best approach is to eliminate the eggs and act quickly.”

Correct spraying techniques, Mr Craig said, also play a crucial role in controlling the pest.
“The way pesticides are applied is very important. Following the correct spraying methods will help ensure effective control,” he said.
“There is no need to panic because the pest can be controlled with timely intervention, the right chemicals and proper application methods.”
