A man who allegedly sired twins who are now aged 12 denied paternity in court on Tuesday.
Regina Katiyo, the twins’ mother, had gone to the court seeking US$300 monthly maintenance.
Katiyo said she needs help in paying the kids’ school fees, buying groceries and covering medical bills.
“I am struggling with my part-time jobs, which pay US$120 per month; that is why I am asking for US$300.
“The children’s school fees are US$60 per month and there are other expenses for transport, uniforms, food and medical attention,” she said.
Energy Chikumba, the alleged father, said he was currently married and had four other kids.
“I never knew about the twins’ pregnancy and only got to meet them last year when they were already 11 years old.
“Thus, I am seeking paternity tests for these children as I do not believe I fathered them. I used to be in a relationship with Katiyo when she was married to another man.
“I can only afford to give her US$50 for both kids as my salary covers bills for my spouse and four kids,” he said.
Harare magistrate Ms Johanna Mukwesha ruled that Chikumba should pay US$50 every month until the children turn 18.
“You can seek paternity tests. If the children turn out to be yours, you continue paying maintenance, but if they turn out not to be yours, Katiyo will pay you back all the money you would have used on them,” said Ms Mukwesha.
