ONE of Chipinge’s oldest buildings, Sidar Corner, was razed to the ground after a fire broke out around 9pm last night and nothing was recovered from the shop.

Acting Town Secretary for Chipinge Town Council Mr James Mutemera said they are still waiting for the assessment report even though it is believed that the fire broke out as a result of an electric fault.

“We are waiting for the assessment report but nothing was recovered from the shop. The tenant at the building was operating a motor spares shop with batteries in stock. So this worsened the situation as the fire was just uncontrollable.

“The cause of the fire is yet to be established even though it is believed that it is likely to be an electric fault since we were experiencing incessant on and off power supplies,’ said Mr Mutemera.

One of the oldest buildings in Chipinge central business district, Sidar Corner, which has a sentimental value to the people in the farming town, was constructed in the pre-independence era and was recently renovated.
