It was a good weekend for the Texas Christian University (TCU) duo of Chengetayi Mapaya and Tino Matiyenga at the NM Collegiate Classic.
Zimbabwe triple jump champion Mapaya earned his second Big 12 Athlete of the Week honours at TCU on Wednesday.
He did so after a world number one mark of 16,80 metres.
The 23-year-old won the event, retaining his NCAA number one ranking in the process.
He achieved his latest ranking last week with his 16,48-metre jump at the Texas Tech Open & Multis.
However, his 16,80m jump is now the best in the world this year.
Not to be outdone, fellow Zimbabweans Matiyenga and Kundai Maguranyanga also picked up gold medals at the weekend’s NM Collegiate Classic.
Together with partners David Seete and Robert Gregory, the Zimbabwe sprinters won the 4×100 relays.
The squad’s time of 3:06.30 is now a top 10 time in the NCAA this season.
Elsewhere, Zimbabwe high jump wonderkid, Kudakwashe Chadenga, broke the 22-year-old Zimbabwe indoor record of 2,16 metres set by legendary jumper Juma Phiri.
The South Plains College student cleared 2,20 metres at the Charles Thomas Invitational at the weekend and now holds the sixth-best jump in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).
