FOOTBALLERS of Union Zimbabwe (FUZ) president, Desmond Maringwa, has saluted energy giant Sakunda Holdings for taking a lead in giving Premiership bigwigs Dynamos and Highlanders an opportunity to regain their status in the domestic game.
Dynamos and Highlanders have not won the league championship in the last seven and 15 years, respectively.
The traditional powerhouses have been pushed into the shade in terms of on-pitch success stories by the likes of FC Platinum.
But the traditional giants have managed to retain their huge following, especially in Harare and Bulawayo, where they command the highest numbers of fans.
Sakunda Holdings has undertaken an unprecedented move to also strengthen the DeMbare and Bosso capacities.
Maringwa, who leads the most important product for any of the clubs – the players – on Wednesday hailed the emergence of Sakunda on the football landscape.
“I would like to thank the sponsors (Sakunda) for inviting us (FUZ) to be part and parcel of this great initiative of a strategic plan for both Highlanders and Dynamos…it is a very important aspect of in football in terms of how you got about in business because football is now big business and it is no longer child’s play.
“Football involves a lot of people, the players, administrators, coaches and even groundsmen and everybody and you need a collective approach to exactly the things you need to achieve,’’ said Maringwa.
The former Warriors midfielder, who led Dynamos to the 2008 CAF Champions League semi-final said despite failing to win the domestic championship in recent years, both DeMbare and Bosso remained Zimbabwean football trendsetters.
