GOVERNMENT has appointed a new five-member board of trustees for the National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe (NMMZ), as it seeks to preserve and protect Zimbabwe’s heritage, traditional institutions, cultural values and practices.

The board of trustees will be chaired by Brigadier General (Rtd) Walter Epmarcus Kanhanga.

The other board members include, Professor Sara Baisai Feresu, Dr Munyaradzi Manyanga, Ms Virginia Madiro and Mr Dictor Khumalo.

During the inauguration in Harare on Wednesday, Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister Kazembe Kazembe said the board should ensure that standards of corporate governance are upheld, while preserving the nation’s cultural integrity.

“I am mandated under Section 4 and 5 of the (National Museums and Monuments) Act to appoint a board of trustees after consultations with the President for the following purposes; to administer museums and national monuments vested in or controlled by the Board.

“To provide for the preservation of monuments, relics and other objects of historical or scientific value or interest; and to investigate and report upon any matter relating to any monument or relic, including the desirability of declaring any monument to be a national monument,” he said.

The new board of trustees comes in after a prolonged absence of a board for the NMMZ.
